Apple’s iPad that was introduced last year performed exceptionally well in terms of units sales, since it did not face stiff competition at all. However, this year will witness the launch of Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom, both of which run on Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). In addition to this, the HP (Palm) TouchPad will also be launched this year. Given that all of the above mentioned devices have a large screen and some really exciting features, the yet to be launched Apple iPad 2 will have to have some exceptional features and specifications to give tough competition to these devices. Here’s an analysis of the hardware and software specification of each of the devices that clearly indicate why the iPad2 must come with improvements.
All the above mentioned devices have one camera for sure. While the Xoom has a 5 megapixel camera, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has an 8 mega pixel. HP on the other hand offers one front facing camera that assists in video calling. Therefore, Apple will have to include a camera which is similar to the iPod Touch.
Both the Tab 10.1 and Xoom will have at least a 1GHz dual-core processor and therefore iPad cannot afford to lag behind. Hence, it will have to have a minimum of 1.2GHz processing power to outshine these other gadgets.
In addition to this, Apple iPad 2 will also have a Retina or Higher Resolution display. Yet another improvement that is expected in the iPad 2 is a slimmer form factor. If Apple could shed some amount of thickness alongside width, it will make the iPad 2 the sleekest 10 inch tablet in the industry. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 is 0.07 inches (1.8mm) thinner than the existing iPad. Again, only Xoom comes with an SD card slot. Hence, if the new iPad comes with an expandable memory or a card slot it would only make users happy.
On the software side, the iOS notifications require an update for many years now. In comparison to Apple, Palm’s WebOS is more alluring. The widgets offered by both WebOS and Android are more attractive in comparison to iOS. Hence, Apple iPad 2 will have to provide better widgets to impress users.
